Do your children like to draw? Of course they do. Here are some drawing videos I found on YouTube that are child tested and approved by me. Drawing enhances brain development and works like meditation to improve focus and self-regulation. If you are like most parents, you don’t feel confident to help your children with this lofty skill, so these videos could be just what you need. You might even find yourself drawing right along!
YouTube has good things on it, and YouTube has some real junk. To protect your kids from the junk you can make your own parent channel. Then you can subscribe to the channels you approve and show your kids how to stick to the approved videos. Or you can just browse these channels yourself and set your kids up to draw using just the videos you choose. As always, supervision of technology use is the key.
All your children really need for this is paper and pencil. Any paper will do, or if it seems right, you can buy your child a small sketch book. Many kids like to keep their drawings in a book and show them off to grandma and friends. And, don’t forget the Magic Rub eraser.
- Regular Pencil and sharpener
- Magic Rub eraser – white, at any office supply store
- Sketch book – unlined, 6″ x 8″ is a good size for kids and it travels well in a back pack
- Black pen or Sharpie for outlining and filling in – kids love to do this and some videos call for it
- Colored pencils – bright ones
- Small set of markers
Drawing Videos and Channels
Art for Kids Hub This is a great channel. It has a dad, Rob, and his son, Chuckers, drawing together, side by side. Children like seeing the adult and child drawing the same thing. It helps them accept their skills as right for their age and reduces self-criticism.
Circle Line Art School Older, and adventurous younger children, will love this channel. Some very real drawing skills here.
Art Channel Another channel with more advanced videos for kids of any age, or whoever is interested.
Overnight Artist This channel has step by step drawing videos for a huge variety of topics from holidays, to fancy letters, to everyday things. Younger and older kids will find something here.
Draw So Cute The drawing lessons on this channel are easy and the artist goes slow, so young kids can keep up easily. Older kids like this channel, too. It has really cute images and themes, with a cartoon style.
Advanced Sketching for Kids Another channel with Rob and Checkers. This channel has more advanced lessons than Art for Kids Hub and sometimes Checkers draws with his dad and other times not. An optional daily challenge format gives a little structure if your youngster wants.
The nice thing about these art lessons is you don’t even have to be involved. It’s just between the child and the artist. Resist the temptation to hover, advise, critique, or push your child to make it exactly like the one in the video. This is not the purpose and if you push, your child will lose interest quickly.
Teach your child how to pause and rewind the videos because, sometimes, everyone needs to just stop, erase, and start again. That’s OK. I do it, too.
Have a blast with this. Watch your child’s confidence bloom!
